James Madison University
Harrisonburg, Virginia
Summary
As the first phase of the redevelopment at James Madison University’s Village Area, this new dormitory offers students comfortable, modern housing intended to enhance campus living and encourage community. The six-story building replaces the demolished Ikenberry Hall-- named to honor the university’s former vice president for academic affairs—and maintains JMU’s historic collegiate style, scale, and welcoming environment. Designed in an “H” configuration with a large center structure flanked by two side wings, the residence hall relies on brick and other traditional exterior materials to ensure a seamless blend with the wider campus. The new Ikenberry features 464 beds in 255 single and double units that share unisex bathroom pods, classrooms, large open common spaces on the first floor, smaller study areas and zen rooms sprinkled throughout so students don’t have to leave the dorms to interact with friends or find a quiet spot to just chill.
